Google AI Mode ads are paid placements that Google is testing inside AI-generated answers, and no separate campaign type exists for them yet. Advertisers get in through existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns, with AI Max for Search as the main path Google points to.
Here is what Google has confirmed, what is still a test, and what to do this week. Micro Supple wrote this guide for marketers who run ads in India. Read it with our Google and Meta Ads service page open if you want a second opinion.
What Are Google AI Mode Ads?
Google AI Mode ads are sponsored placements shown inside or beside AI-generated answers in Google Search. They use the existing ad auction and campaign types, so advertisers cannot buy them through a dedicated campaign. Google decides when an ad fits the question and the answer.
Google’s official help page covers ads in AI Overviews. It does not mention AI Mode. Industry coverage on 9 October 2026 describes AI Mode formats such as Conversational Discovery ads, Highlighted Answers and Direct Offers as tests or pilots. So treat every format below as limited and changing, and check your own account before you plan budgets around it. Do not copy a competitor’s claim without proof.
| Format | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Text and Shopping ads | Ads from eligible campaigns shown with AI answers | Testing (per Search Engine Land) |
| Conversational Discovery ads | Gemini-written ad copy tailored to the user’s question | Testing |
| Highlighted Answers | Sponsored brands inside recommendation lists | Testing |
| Direct Offers | Promo codes shown during shopping chats; beta asset needs AI Max or text customization | Pilot / beta |
Wrap-up: know the format names now, so you can spot them in your reports later.
Who Sees Google AI Mode Ads in India?
Google AI Mode ads have no confirmed India rollout list in Google’s own help pages. Google does confirm that ads inside AI Overviews can appear in India, in English only. Marketers should treat AI Mode availability as unverified until their account shows it.
This gap matters. Many blogs blend AI Overviews and AI Mode into one thing, but Google’s help page lists only AI Overviews. For India, the confirmed facts are narrow: English language, mobile and desktop, text and Shopping ads from Search, Shopping and Performance Max. Sensitive categories such as finance, healthcare, alcohol, gambling and politics are excluded from ads inside AI Overviews.
- Confirmed: ads can appear above or below AI Overviews in 200+ markets, and within them in India (English only).
- Confirmed: you cannot opt out of ads in AI Overviews or target those placements directly.
- Confirmed: Google Ads does not offer segmented reporting for them; they appear as Top Ads.
- Unverified: exact AI Mode ad availability in India. Ask your Google rep or check your account.
Wrap-up: plan for what is confirmed, and label the rest as a test.
How AI Max Links to Google AI Mode Ads
AI Max is a Google Ads feature set that extends Search campaigns with keywordless matching, Final URL expansion and asset generation. It is the route Google recommends for newer AI formats, so it affects how often your ads can match long, conversational queries.
Google’s AI Max FAQ describes it as an evolution of Dynamic Search Ads and Performance Max with Final URL expansion. It respects negative keywords. Pinned ad copy is not respected in some setups, such as when text customization and Final URL expansion are both on. If you still run DSA, read our guide on moving from Dynamic Search Ads to AI Max first.
- Open the AI Max settings in each Search campaign and note what is on.
- Use conversion-based bidding. Google says manual CPC limits AI Max.
- Run a 1-click experiment. Google creates a 50/50 split against your base campaign.
- Add brand controls and negatives before you widen matching.
- Check which landing pages Final URL expansion picks.
Wrap-up: test AI Max on one campaign before you roll it out. Our note on Dynamic Search Ads and AI Max shows the timeline.
Google AI Mode Ads: Risks and Controls
Google AI Mode ads carry real trade-offs: wider reach on conversational queries, but weaker visibility into where your ad showed. Reporting does not split AI placements today, so advertisers must judge results by campaign totals, not by placement. That makes guardrails important.
The main risk is spend you cannot trace. AI Max reporting shows expanded and keywordless matches, headlines and landing pages. It does not report AI Mode placement performance separately, according to Search Engine Land’s 9 October 2026 guide. Pair that with automatic features such as promotions, and your controls need a regular check each week. See our post on Google Ads automated promotions for the same lesson.
| Area | Benefit | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | Matches long, natural-language questions | Ads may match queries you never planned for |
| Creative | Google AI can write headlines and pick landing pages | Pinned copy may be ignored; off-brand text is possible |
| Reporting | Search term and asset reports exist in AI Max | No AI Mode placement split; AI Overview ads show as Top Ads |
| Budget | Smart bidding can adapt to intent | Hard to prove which placement drove a sale |
Wrap-up: set guardrails first, then widen. Our automated promotions checklist uses the same approach.
Google AI Mode Ads Checklist: What to Do Now
A Google AI Mode ads checklist is a short audit that confirms your campaigns, feeds and tracking are ready for AI placements. It lowers wasted spend by fixing eligibility, bidding and measurement before Google shows your ads in new places.
Nothing here needs a new campaign type. Most steps take under an hour each. The timeline below is our suggested plan, not a Google rule. Start with eligibility, because Google ties newer formats to AI Max, Performance Max and Shopping. Then fix measurement, because you cannot judge a format you cannot see. Finish with a controlled test on one campaign.
- Day 1: list Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns and note which use broad match.
- Day 2: check conversion tracking and switch to conversion-based bidding where data allows.
- Day 3: add brand controls, negative keywords and URL exclusions.
- Day 4: refresh Merchant Center feeds and offers if you sell products.
- Week 2: start a 50/50 AI Max experiment on one campaign.
- Week 3: compare conversions and cost per conversion at campaign level.
- Week 4: keep, change or stop based on the numbers, and write down why.
Wrap-up: one clean test beats five rushed changes.
Google AI Mode Ads FAQs
Google AI Mode ads questions come down to access, control and proof. Google confirms the AI Overview details and labels most AI Mode formats as tests, so each answer below separates what is confirmed from what is still reported by industry press only.
These answers follow Google’s own help pages first and industry reporting second. Where a point has no primary source, we mark it as unverified. Check your Google Ads account notes before acting, because test access differs by account and country, and Google may change terms with little warning. Treat every figure and format as subject to change, and re-read the help pages before each budget review.
Are Google AI Mode ads live in India?
Unverified. Google’s help page confirms ads in AI Overviews in India, in English only. It does not list AI Mode. Check your account for new asset or format options.
Do I need a new campaign for Google AI Mode ads?
No. Search Engine Land reports no separate AI Mode campaign type exists. Ads come through existing campaigns, and Google points to AI Max, Performance Max and Shopping for newer formats.
Can I turn off ads in AI answers?
For AI Overviews, Google says you cannot opt out or target those placements directly. For AI Mode, no opt-out setting is documented in Google’s help pages.
How do I report on Google AI Mode ads?
You cannot split them today. Google says ads in AI Overviews show as Top Ads. AI Max reports matches, headlines and landing pages, not AI Mode placement.
What is a Direct Offer asset?
A beta asset reported on 7 October 2026. You set an offer, a URL and a description, and Google AI decides when to show it. It needs AI Max or text customization.
Should small businesses in India spend on this now?
Test small. Use one campaign, one experiment and a fixed budget. Sensitive categories such as finance and healthcare are excluded from ads in AI Overviews.
